What Are Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pumps and How Do They Work?

Take a moment to picture your home’s water system. If you turn on a tap in the kitchen, that doesn’t cause water to flow in the bathroom. Instead, the water is only presented where it is needed to avoid wasting resources. 

However, traditional HVAC systems do work that way. You turn on a furnace and warm air is pushed through ducts into all rooms with vents. This means you may want to heat the living room but it also goes into the dining room, kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms. 

Ductless heat pumps are different. They’re more like the water system we mentioned. You can have every room in the home at a different temperature as long as the space has an indoor unit.

When you choose a ductless mini-split heat pump, you control the comfort of every room. In rooms that don’t need the same amount of heating, none of it has to go there. It’s efficient and lets you feel at home in every room of your house. 

Indoor units can be placed in every single room if you like. However, small homes may need only one. If the home is large and several people live there, you could have one in areas where people congregate as well as in bedrooms.

The unit outside moves the cool or warm air into the home. It’s usually installed on the ground and does not make use of ducts. It takes the warm air (even in cold seasons) and moves it into the indoor units, which include refrigerant. The same happens in reverse in the summer to bring cool air inside.

A remote control makes it simple to control the units indoors. Many of the remotes have a display that shows the current temperature, the temperature you want, and other important information about the unit itself. You can easily set the ideal temperature for each room or even build schedules for heating and cooling.
